Lauderhill Sister Cities

To:           Lauderhill Sisters Cities Board of Directors

From:      Joan Cartwright, Board Member

Date:       August 20, 2011

Re:           Report onFiuggi,Italy

Dear Board of Directors:

Attached is correspondence between Patricia Chiti of Donne in Musica and me, plus the two emails that I received from Mayor Kaplan, while he and his wife were in Fiuggi, Italy, in June. The Mayor’s emails were copied to members of the City’s staff, as well. They sum up what took place between Mayors Kaplan and Martini of Fiuggi, Italy, and serve as my report on Mayor Kaplan’s visit to this city that is being considered for a twinning withLauderhill.

I have no further information about this trip. Perhaps, Mayor Kaplan has more to report.

Thank you,

Joan Cartwright

Thanks for your message below. Though I work on staying very positive, I realize the world is in a financial dilemma. Money is not flowing like it was in the 1990s, when I traveled to and lived inEurope. However, I keep the dream close to my heart that I will get there sooner than later. This year is almost over, but I do believe 2012 will offer greater opportunities for us all.

I trust you are feeling better these days.

Our Sister Cities Board is interested in this twinning. Let’s see how it all progresses.

Love and Music,

Dear Joan

We hope you get here at some time too. Yesterday, I saw our Mayor who was very enthusiastic about the visit from your Mayor and showed me a beautiful “memento” of the visit that had been sent by the Mayor’s wife who is an excellent photographer.

All best wishes

Just met with Mayor Martini again, along with a Commissioner, and another Mayor and Commissioners of the adjoining city.  There was a lot of interest in the Incubator Program and the Enterprise Zone.

We also spoke about sports matters particularly golf.  There have a really nice course here, and they are interested in Inverrary’s.  Don’t know where that might go, but there was a lot of talk with a visit being considered to Florida.

Music and art were discussed too.

They are also into tourism, and thought about doing some sort of travel workshop in our area to encourage tour operators to stop in Fiuggi (which is pronounced Fu-jee).  Now that would go beyond Lauderhill, but that would be fine.  It really is a nice place that Lynn and I would recommend people come to for a variety of things.  I’ll talk more about that when we return.

I advised that we need to work out as many details that we can before they travel to make their trip worthwhile.  I think that each interested party will have to develop their area and work with whoever we can work it out with.  So there was a lot of positive action with a interest in being a Sister City.  I think that the common programs have to worked out before twining.

Mayor Kaplan and Mayor Martini - June 24, 2011

Friday, June 24, 2011

Lynn and I met with Mayor Martini over lunch and had a very nice meeting with him.  He speaks English, but no one else does.  He also does not read his own email.  Therefore, in the future, anything sent to him must be in Italian to reach him.

I presented him with the materials I given to me from Lauderhill and spoke to him about our programs.  There is quite a lot that interested him, particularly the art exchange and possibly the International Business Incubator Program.  Tourism is a major industry here, and his biggest exporter and local business is Fiuggi Water.  It is very famous and very good.  You actually get it from the tap and it is a natural mineral water.  It maybe available in the NY area.

He will be speaking with the company to see if they are interested in exploring South Florida.  Our program may be a way for them to enter that market.

Fiuggi is a beautiful town, and though it is not well known, is a place Lynn and I would recommend a visit to for a few days for someone coming into this area.

Lynn and I expect to meet with the Mayor again tomorrow night for a social engagement and see where it may go.

Lynn has taken quite a few pictures which she will be providing to the city, including photos that can be used in the Spotlight.

Thanks for all the help.

Mayor Kaplan
